naff pants

I was just talking with a bunch of merkins, trying to explain why I loathe the string "j/k" (which is a rant I shall save for some other time). While doing so, I used the word "naff", only to be met by many virtual blank looks. In my innocence, I'd failed to realise that this highly useful word was a Britishism. And in attempting to come up with synonyms, I actually said "pants", which is, of coursre, also a Britishism, when used in that sense. This then turned into a discussion about different words for trousers and various undergarments, and eventually the word "panties" was mentioned. And I have to say, isn't that really just an incredibly naff word?

not all pants are created equal.

weird. something similar happened irl with me and "minging".
and I'd thought pants, in that usage, was a specific britishism - it seems to be mostly used by nice white christian boys.

"panties" is a useful word, its a subset of pants, though, you'd hardly catch me in them.

Re: not all pants are created equal.

What's all this sexism, then ;)? In my experience, females use the word 'pants' far in excess of boys, in most contexts. (Boys call their underwear boxers or whatever it is, and either swear or don't swear; if they do use silly little curse words, they tend to go for 'damn' or 'drat' or 'bother'.)

I seem to be all about the corruption of nice white british christian boys..

see, you have to understand its not sexisim - its that truly, in my experience, its been nice white christian boys. Just boys. You, of course, have to take into consideration that I've not yet known in real life, a nice anything christian girl.

Re: I seem to be all about the corruption of nice white british christian boys..

Will have to meet you, then; that will deal with that gap in your experience :). After all, I was recently told that I was altogether too nice for my own safety...

Re: I seem to be all about the corruption of nice white british christian boys..

so I guess I'm suppose to corrupt you as well? ;)

Re: I seem to be all about the corruption of nice white british christian boys..

Sorry to spoil your fun, but I think you'll find that sath and naath got there first :).

I'd just like to be the first to say: there are panties. And there are manties.

*looks around* Did anyone get there before me? No? Good.

Naff comes from Polari, gay/rent boy slang from 1960's London. It's an acronym...

Ooh, I'd never heard that explanation before. I'd always seen it spelled "naph" in Polari (though I'd assumed it had trickled down into mainstream slang from there).

*googles* Aha.

It's an acronym...
for what?

Same goes with "Prat", "Torch" (as in the electric version - had fun trying to ask my ex to bring along a "torch" with her in the car so we could communicate, had to explain "long cylinder with bulb at one end, switch on the side, and has batteries in them " "Oh! Flashlight!" "Gah!"), "Lorry", "Snog", and a few more I can't remember. I just wish the americans don't call their language "English" but "American". Right I better stop myself before I get into a rant ;)

Yeah, we had a merkin on MancGoff who needed "pants" and "snog" explained to her.

Odd, I've never met anyone over here who didn't know what pants were.
