This particular meme has done the rounds on my friends list several times in the past, and I've never done it before. This time, however, I have several much more important things which I am busily avoiding doing, and so I fill your friends pages with memishness.

The game, for those of you who haven't seen it before, works like this. I load up my entire media library into my mp3 player of choice, put it on random, then write down a lyric from the first twenty songs that it plays (not counting instrumentals, multiple songs by the same artist, and so on). Your task is then to tell me the song title and artist for each lyric. No googing allowed.
  1. Hey, kid, rock and roll; nobody tells you where to go
  2. You're on your own; you have no friends. Give up your guns or die.
  3. Close your eyes and think of me and soon I will be there
  4. Big men often tremble as they step aside
  5. He put a ribbon on its head to make it cute, but it still looked like a chihuahua
  6. He's the king of cool and he's the devil who waits
  7. I've got an aching in my bones; I've been exposed to what I want to see
  8. I just can't contain this feeling that remains
  9. Kicking in chairs and knocking down tables in a restaurant in a West End town
  10. Europium, zirconium, lutetium, vanadium and lanthanum and osmium and astatine and radium
  11. I've learned that nothing really lasts forever: I sleep with the scars that I wear that won't heal
  12. Don't you sway -- control your breathing. Look at me, it's very easy
  13. Our lives dictated by tradition, superstition, false religion
  14. Barbecue is cooking sausages and chicken
  15. Now it's time to say goodbye to my suit, my shirt my tie
  16. All my love is running down the line but you won't receive it
  17. It's not as if they're paying you, it's not as if it's fun -- at least not any more
  18. It feels so good to hurt so bad and suffer just enough to sing the blues
  19. Did she ever marry old what's his face?
  20. This is not real, this is not really happening

The only one I can think of right now is number 15: The Divine Comedy's Too Young to Die. 10 is the Periodic Table song, but I can't remember who that is by. I'm nbot very good at this, am I?

ok, i'll admit my showing is pretty poor, but:
4) TMGB - She's Actual Size (i think)
9) West End Girls - Pet Shop Boys
10) The Elements - Tom Lehrer

Sorry, I probably only got the easy ones.

Your reason for doing it equals my reason for answering. :)

1. Drive/R.E.M.
3. You've Got a Friend/James Taylor
9. West End Girls/Pet Shop Boys

... it's the most I can do, at least for now.

Uh. I know #3, I think, although I can't recall artist or title... You just call out my name, and you know, whereever I am, I'll come running, to see you again. Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall, all you got to do is call, and I'll be there.

I'm also pretty sure I know what #10 is, although I never actually heard the song. Weird Al or someone like that, IIRC. :)

Ooh! I actually know a couple of those!
3. James Taylor, "You've Got a Friend"--I spent way too long mixing this for an elementary school's graduation. It is burned into my head. Make it go away.
10. Tom Lehrer, "The Elements Song"--yay!
20. Tori Amos, "Cornflake Girl"--my old roommate loved this song. Psycho.

miss you, sweetie.

1. REM - Drive

That's pretty pathetic, only one. But there you go.

20. "Cornflake Girl" by Tori Amos

I completely don't recognize anything else on the list.

Gah! I feel crap the only one I even vaguely recognised was for Dodgy - Good Enough. I shall no doubt kick myself loads whent the answers are revealed!

1) R.E.M. not sure which song, although I can hear it in my head... Monty Got a Raw Deal?

4) They Might Be Giants maybe "Narrow Your Eyes" I know it continues, "I thought I was big then; she changed my mind"

10) Tom Lehrer "The Elements" that one is easy

20) Tori Amos probably "Cornflake Girl" "you bet your life it is, oh you bet your life... peel out the watchword..."

When I know them, I can hear them, but that doesn't always help me figure out what they are.

3. Carly Simon - You've got a friend
20. Tori Amos - Cornflake Girl
