Are there really people this ignorant out there still?

  • 1
That's more or less exactly what I thought. Odd that.

*boggle*
I do know that there are a lot of ignorant people out there, but GEEZ. Suddenly if I am a girl and I like other girls as well as men I want to be a boy??
I should be used to this, considering my best friend is a pre-op Transexual, but the ignorance of the masses blows my mind.

Oh, please. Yes, the person was ignorant and took it badly, but it's a level of ignorance *highly* prevalent among "normal" people. Hell, most people barely understand bisexual/gay people. You start to talk about transgendering and you blow their little minds with your dark seedy lifestyle...

Just remember, nothing is real until after you've heard of it. If you happen to be the first (or almost the first) transgendered person somebody meets, then you can safely be ignored as a statistical anomaly...

Probably the kind of person who thinks being bisexual means you have a boyfriend _and_ a girlfriend.

Sometimes the same person...

Yeah, but maybe by taking the time to explain, as you did, you can help them be NOT ignorant. :)

Lots of "normal" people have never met someone who is openly bisexual, let alone a transsexual. So honest confusion is no sin, here, especially if you don't know the meaning of the prefixes.

However, what bugs me is not that she didn't know the difference, but that she wasn't willing to just pick up a dictionary. ;-p

That's pretty standard in the random questions community :(

um, but most dictionaries are going to either not have that sort of words in, or are going to have bad definitions.

Personally I get the words confused. I can understand the ideas, but don't allways know what label I'm suppposed to pin on what idea.

If you don't personally know anyone who identifies as transgender, transexual, bi, gay or whatever then you probably aren't going to know what all the words mean.

It's a good thing that ppl are willing to ask questions like that where ppl who know the answers can answer them, rather than remaining eeeegnerent.

Uh, what dictionaries are you using? Any dictionary I can think of would have definitions for both. Good ones, too. Hell, dictionary.com produces pretty good results on both terms, including a biological use of the term "bisexual" that I'd forgotten.

I obviously have out-of-date dictionaries.
