Seeking book recommendations

As I was reading a section of another book (The Ancestor's Tale by Richard Dawkins), I was reminded that I really want to read a good popular-science type book about colour and colour vision, which nicely covers physics, chemistry, biology and psychology and ties everything nicely together. Of course, I have no idea what such a book may be, or even if it exists. So my first question is, do any of you know of such a book?

And then I thought, wouldn't it be good if there was a LiveJournal community for just this sort of question? Somehwere where you could say "I want to read a book about $topic" and you could get people recommending them to you. So my second question to you people is, do any of you know of such a community?

I've been looking for a book like that for a while. Something to read myself and if it is any good to pimp at other people.

You might try asking in academics_anon. Book requests come up in there from time to time - though the community does tend towards arts/humanities.

I recommend Consciousness Explained by Daniel C. Dennett.

Not that I'm biased or anything. Okay, maybe I am, a little bit. ;)
