Ads on LJ
hail!
rho
So. Ads on LJ, eh? My thoughts, in bullet format:
  • I hate ads
  • Furthermore, I hate ads
  • Really, I'm not so bothered by this though, because I'll never have to see them
  • And everyone is still getting either exactly what they paid for or getting something for nothing
  • And yes, it kinda sucks that the old business model is being somewhat abandoned, but communism didn't work either
  • Slashdot sure does print a load of crap
  • The sky appears to still be exactly where I left it
  • If you're worried about a slippery slope, decide where the line is, and stick to your convictions and leave if they cross it
  • Me, I'll be looking for a new agregator if I can't see my friends age without ads, and a new publishing platform if I have to have ads on my journal. And if I'm looking for one, I'll probably just leave entirely.
  • I worry that since free users are going to see a bunch of ads anyway, there'll end up being little incentive not to move to the ad level.
  • Bikesheds. Etc.
Or to put it more simply: I don't particularly like it, but aren't massively bothered either.

And not fussing over the colour thereof. Which is to say, choosing battles, and not kicking up a huge fuss over anything that I'm not massively fond of.

I think I may be getting an idea that you're not keen on ads. ;)

The sky is falling on my head. *peers out of the window and can't see anything through the rain*

I pretty much agree with all of that..

I'm not going to leave. I'm not going to bitch (much). But I've lost a bit of affection for LJ over this. As a result, I probably won't buy a paid journal - it sounds cheesy but my reason for getting one last time was more to do with supporting a good thing than the paid features.

I'll see the ads and be irritated by them, but not enough to give in and upgrade for that reason. For the same sort of semi-irrational reason that I will never upgrade to a paid Hotmail account - I got pissed off with the nibbling away at the free users abilities to try and drive you to buy. LJ will feel less like a place I feel at home and more like every other place on the web.

I feel much the same. That was why I first bought a paid account, back in the day. It was also why I helped out in support, etc. And one of the big reasons why I don't do the latter any more is that it wouldn't feel like supporting a community, but supporting a corporation. From what I've heard though, the growth statistics seemed to indicate that free account use was growing at a faster rate than paid account use, or something along those lines. It's sad that that's the case, but not entirely surprising. There are over 10 million accounts now, and the bigger the site grows, the harder it is to maintain the community feel, with people paying to support the site. It makes me a little sad, but is one of those things I can shrug off as one of those things.

Yes.
