Things that are annoying: Being woken up by the telephone ringing.
Things that are very annoying: Being woken up by the telephone and it being a wrong number.
Things that are extremely annoying: Being woken up by the telephone and it being a wrong number text message sent to my land line through the BT disembodied voice gateway thingy.
Things that are beyond annoying: Being woken up by the telephone and it being a wrong number text message sent to my land line through the BT disembodied voice gateway thingy and then not being able to get back to sleep for ages.
Things that are going to make me grouchy for the whole of today: Being woken up by the telephone and it being a wrong number text message sent to my land line through the BT disembodied voice gateway thingy and then not being able to get back to sleep for ages, and the having the phone ring again just as I was starting to get back to sleep, but then stop before I reached it.

"Damn and blast British Telecom!" said Dirk, the words coming easily through force of habit.

You can instruct the disembodied voice (what happened to Tom Baker? He was entertaining enough to make the thing non-pointless) to stop harassing you, or to only harass you at certain times of day, via a menu thing on 0800 587 5252. Google suggests this is the relevant reference, but it appears to have succomed to the now legendary "essential maintenance" gremlins.

Personally, I have no time for the wretched thing. It nearly always indicates that someone who lacks the technical aptitude to successfully operate a mobile that can store multiple numbers per person is trying to contact us. An event which usually results in surreal and tiring randomness, tech support requests, questions which would be more effectively directed at Google or, on a bad day, all of above.

I was just googling for this quote (because someone else was damning and blasting BT, naturally), and it seems that this entry is now top hit for a google search for "damn and blast british telecom". I think that's rather impressive.
