Just keep on trying till you run out of cake

A couple of days ago, I had a random craving for eggs. I hadn't eaten eggs for ages, and clearly, that needed to be remedied. So yesterday, I went out to the supermarket to buy some, and today, I cooked them. In the process, I was reminded of two things, which explain why I hadn't eaten eggs for ages:

1. I am almost pathologically incapable of cooking eggs without creating a godawful mess. I'm sure I could get better if I practised, but I never do, because:
2. I don't even particularly like eggs very much.

Can someone please remind of me these two facts next time I consider buying eggs? I swear, I'd forget my head if it wasn't screwed on, etc.

Take two eggs. Break shells, and put contents thereof into bowl. Break yolk using a fork, and beat using said fork, until yolk and white are combined. Preheat a pan, with a small layer of fat/oil/butter* at the bottom. Pour eggy mixture into pan. Continue beating at it with a fork to stop it from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Fail utterly. Put a bit of egg onto a plate. Scrape off a bit more egg from the bottom of the pan onto the plate. Run lots of hot water into the pan and leave it to soak.

I suspect that my problem is that I'm cooking it for too long, but this is somewhat difficult to judge, since the time period between "not enough" and "too much" seems to be fairly small. I'm sure I could get the hang of this with practice, but see point 2.

By the way, I think you're supposed to rinse frying pans with egg on them with cold water. If you use hot, it tends to cook the egg more and make it stick to the pan.

Continue beating at it with a fork to stop it from sticking to the bottom of the pan.

This is the first problem I see. Forks don't have enough surface area to move the partially-cooked egg bits around. Try a pancake turner. And if that's not a phrase you'd use, shove it in a Google image search. ;)

You may have cooked the eggs too long or too hard. I use a medium heat for scrambled eggs. Once the eggs are in the pan, don't beat them but work around the edge of the pan pulling the solidified egg into the centre, allowing liquid to take its place. Once all of the egg is solidified, it's done.
